This weekend I went on my annual jaunt to Herefordshire with some of my very closest friends. We’ve been doing this trip – same time, same place – for five years now. The hotel – The Old Court Hotel in Symonds Yat is a housed in a beautiful old building which dates back to Elizabethan times and still retains many original features. The setting is glorious Herefordshire countryside with plenty of places for dog walking (we had 5 four-legged companions amongst our entourage this year) as well as local places of interest nearby.
As these annual Herefordshire weekends are meant to be for chilling out, eating, drinking and enjoying each other’s company; we don’t tend to stray very far from the Old Court (apart from, of course, on our dog walks) and as such we have always taken all our meals at the hotel pub. The menu has standard pub grub and is expansive which means that throughout the weekend there is always the chance to eat something different each time (this weekend I was rather taken with the spicy nachos). In more recent years we have also taken to dining in the restaurant at the hotel where the food is very good. The dishes listed on the menu are fairly standard, however what the restaurant does seem to do is to take good quality meats (all locally produced) and cook them very well indeed. It was a real problem deciding what to choose, but we all went for something different – much plate-swapping and other-people’s-dinners sampling ensued.
My one regret this weekend, is that I didn’t manage to get around to ordering the cheese board, which I know from previous experience is really good. Oh well, roll on Herefordshire 2013.
